Academic Performance Evaluation Committee (APEC)

There is an Academic Performance Evaluation Committee (APEC) which monitors the academic performance of the students and also the evaluation procedure following a consistent grading system.

Academic Session

The academic session normally begins in the third week of July every year and ends in the middle of July next year.

First Semester : From third week of July to second week of December.
Second Semester : From the last week of December to the second week of May.
Summer Term : From the middle of May to the middle of July.

Evaluation Procedure for B.Tech

A student is normally expected to register for minimum five courses every semester of the course curriculum. Each course has a certain number of contact hours (lectures and tutorials) and may contain a certain number of laboratory hours per week. A letter-grade system is followed in UIET.

Grading System

A letter-grade system is followed in UIET. At the end of a semester, a student is awarded a letter grade, in each of the courses taken by him, during the semester. The grade awarded to a student depends on his performance in the various examinations, quizzes, laboratory and home assignments, and on his attendance. There are five letter grades - A, B,C, D and F with grade points 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2 respectively.
At the end of every semester a semester performance index (SPI) is calculated for every student which is the weighted average of the grade points. The Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) is used to describe the overall performance of a student up to and including the latest semester. A grade-sheet is given to every student at the end of every semester.

   Semester Performance Index (SPI)

The Semester Performance Index (SPI) will be the weighted average of the grade points. If the grade points of the letter grades awarded to a student in five courses are denoted by g1, g2, g3, g4, g5, and the weights of the courses by w1, w2, w3, w4, w5, respectively, the SPI will be computed as follows :
                        w1g1 + w2g2 + w3g3 + w4g4 + w5g5
            SPI  =  -----------------------------------
                           w1 + w2 + w3 + w4 + w5

The index describes the performance of the student in the courses of a particular semester.

   Cumulative Performance Index (CPI)

The Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) will be used to describe the overall performance of a student upto and including the latest semester. It will be computed in a similar manner from the grade points of all the grades the student has received since his beginning of the course.

                          w1g1 + w2g2 + w3g3 +..
           CPI  =  --------------------------------
                            w1 + w2 + w3 +..

Evaluation Procedure for MCA/BCA

The performance of a student in a semester shall be evaluated through continuous assessment and end semester examination. The marks for continuous assessment (internal assessment marks) shall be awarded at the end of the semester. The end semester examination shall be conducted by means of written papers, practicals and/ or viva-voce.
The end semester examination of compulsory/elective paper shall be of three hour duration. The maximum marks allotted for each paper shall be as following:

   For MCA
  • End Semester Examination 100 marks
  • Internal Assessment 50 marks
  • Passing Criteria for MCA 50% of aggregate at the end of 3 years.
   For BCA
  • End Semester Examination 75 marks
  • Internal Assessment 50 marks
  • Passing Criteria for MCA 40% of aggregate at the end of 3 years.
Further details regarding student evaluation are given in MCA/BCA ordinance available in Institute office.

Evaluation Procedure for M.Sc

   M.Sc. Electronics

M.Sc. Electronics is a full time course of two years duration consisting of four semesters. Each semester consists of four theory courses and one practical course. The final examination (theory and practical) shall be held at the end of each academic semester ordinarily in the months of Dec and May/June each year. Additionally students are required to submit a seminar report in I and III semester and a project report in II and IV semester based on project work performed in the respective semesters.

   M.Sc.Bioinformatics

MSc. Bioinformatics is a full time course of two years duration consisting of four semesters. Each semester consists of five courses. 50% of the marks allotted to each course will be awarded internally (based on mid-semester examination, practicals, quizzes, assignments, seminars and attendance) and the remaining 50% shall be allocated for the end semester (external) examination at the end of the semester. The end semester will consist of a theory paper of three hour duration. As part of project work, students will be required to submit a dissertation on the basis of research which be evaluated by the departmental committee.

   Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Bioinformatics

Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Bioinformatics is a full time course of one year duration consisting of two semesters. Each semester consists of six courses.
